When Brisbane's Ruby Gilbert dropped past Maitland's Grand Junction Hotel on a quiet Tuesday evening to perform some songs as part of William Crighton's monthly Variety Night, Gum Ball promoter Matt Johnston happened to be there.
The long and short of it is that Gilbert is returning to the Hunter Valley to perform for you at The Gum Ball.
The young artist embraces a moody, gothic-tinged style of songwriting. Gilbert is an old soul, inspired by the grittiness of Johnny Cash, whilst channelling a timeless and stylised atmosphere. Her left-of-centre phrasing speaks brutally honest truths. Raw and heart-breaking, her voice evokes an old-time feel, while her lyrics are both strange and endearing.
Gilbert's mesmerising performance style has seen her play festivals around Australia, including the Caloundra Music Festival, Tamworth Country Music Festival, the Gympie Music Muster, as well as being featured at BigSound and Little BigSound.
There's a release on the way, so keep your ear out.
