William Crighton and Gawurra, two mighty forces, one special show.
Two of Australia's unique artists, William Crighton and Gawurra, unite to present remarkable music, cultural diversity and social storytelling at the Tamworth Country Music Festival. The union will take place at the Tamworth Regional Gallery on Thursday, 25th January 2018.
William Crighton and Gawurra's performance will provide an alternate option to mainstream country concerts at the festival, whilst providing important Indigenous recognition at this time. The venue shares equal importance with its pin-drop acoustics and walls adorned by an array of visual art both local and international.
They will also conduct and mentor at a singer-songwriting workshop on the day of this performance.
Both artists have been prominent in the music scene in 2017, with Crighton buoyed by the success of his fascinating self-titled debut album and has captivated audiences with his live work. He played a seamless string of shows on the East coast, West Australia, and Adelaide for WOMADelaide, alongside a plethora of festival appearances in Australia and showcases in Canada and New York City.
After catapulting onto national music stages last year, Yolngu singer-songwriter Stanley “Gawurra” Gaykamangu's culture, beliefs and personal journey are embedded deeply in his songs. They not only tell an Indigenous story but an Australian story. His debut album, Ratja Yaliyali, recorded in his native tongue of Gupapuynga, won 4 NIMAs and was nominated for an ARIA.
With strong bonds to the land and regional areas in their backgrounds, a genuine desire to perform to regional audiences in a full acoustic theatre setting is something both artists are yearning to do in the New Year.
It has been said “William Crighton has the power to stir the heart and soul” and “Gawurra is one of the most important Australian Indigenous voices.”
They will be joined on the night by special guests Magpie Diaries.
